This course is an introduction to the history and culture of the Roman world, from Rome's legendary beginnings through its transformation from a small city-state into the dominant power of the ancient Mediterranean, and from the Republic to the Empire that shaped the foundations of Western civilization. Drawing on literary sources, art, architecture, and archaeology, students will explore Roman political institutions, society, religion, and cultural life from the earliest period to the fall of the Western Empire in the fifth century CE.
